Wow Dad, I've just read your entire post! very interesting I've never looked at it like that. I would think that an air bag would be safer than a race car but yet again your only wearing seat belts in cars where as a racer wears a helmet and a fire resistant suit with gloves and boots. AND you all have a fire extinguisher in reaching distance of your arms(in case something should happen that is). Now I understand where your coming from in that point of view of, racing on a circuit is safer than driving to your local convience store.

The on price G.Kochert's car has recently been reduced! Anyone who is interested in a Formula First should seriously consider this one. It is Built to meet SCCA requirements (not homologated). The motor has only a handful of test sessions and the tranny is fresh! the new price does not include the aims system or the collector (4-2-1), instead he'll replace with a standard stinger. Geno will entertain any serious/creative offer including partial trade, trailer, toy hauler etc.

I have seen this car on the track, It is well built. Chassis built by Terry Murray, and motor by Ron Grider, it's fast and seems to handle quite well, I was really looking forward to racing Geno. But he decided to switch classes and bought a Thunder roadster. He choose not to race it so he could sell it in fresh race ready condition.

If you'd like to see some video of this car on the track during a practice session, just go back to our home page and click on the "wild ride" video, this car appears at 6m:49s and it's the red/white car.

Hi Darren, thanks for the post.

Ahh the wives, while they have legitimate concerns, the truth is racing is far less dangerous than driving to the corner store.

Every year on average we kill 50,000 people in their cars on our streets, it is the leading cause of death for people under 35. With all the airbags and anti lock brakes we haven’t seen a decrease in deaths for the past 20 years. There is only one cause of traffic crashes, no such thing as an accident, unless let’s say lighting strikes a huge tree and it falls on your car on the way by, yeah that would be an accident, every thing else is a crash caused by human error, without it there would be no crashing and no one would get hurt. But the government insists on lowering the standards to get people out on the roads, and therefore we have an overabundance of stupid people out there just waiting to kill us. The law of averages says: every one of us will be involved in at least 3 car crashes in our lifetimes (providing we survive the first 2). I could go on forever about how to make safer drivers, but that’s not the real issue here.

So why is racing safer than driving on the streets….. 1st off the circuit is closed, there are no intersections and everyone is traveling in the same direction and at approx. the same speed, there no cell phones or texting, in fact no distractions of any kind. Formula first is a very basic race car, not allot of controls to deal with, it is one of the purest forms of auto racing there is.

Years ago, racing was the most dangerous sport of all time, almost every race weekend a Formula 1 driver would die in a race, but then they didn’t have the safety equipment we have today, (you can thank Sir Jackie Stewart for that). In fact, seat belts were not used until the late 50’s and with the invention of the HANS device in the early 80’s, racing deaths and serious spinal injuries are now almost non-existent. However it did not become popular or mandatory in most race groups until shortly after Dale Earnhardt's death in 2001, since then the HANS device has become mandatory in every major racing league: F1, IRL, Champ car, Nascar, etc. and subsequently the number of racers dying on the track from basilar skull fractures has dropped to almost zero.

The Hans Device pretty much eliminates basilar skull fractures, which has always been the leading cause of death for race car drivers. Even just a small foam neck brace can reduce the chance of a basilar skull fracture in slower speed crashes, but the Hans is the safety device of choice, and probably the most important safety feature in your car.

Now , having said all that, the fact is FST racing is still a dangerous sport (a big part of the thrill). Anything can happen, you are traveling wheel to wheel at speeds of up to 105 mph, but if you follow the rules, have all the proper safety gear, take care of your car and use common sense , it is still way safer than driving your family car around town.

While your wife's concerns are valid, the chances of you sustaining even a minor injury are pretty slim. My suggestion is to get her out on the track in the street group and let her see for herself that is safer than she thinks, she might even like it so much you may have to build 2 race cars.

The bottom line: No one can convince me that racing on a track is more dangerous than driving on our city streets. For me , the scariest part of racing is driving to the track!

I am making a call to all that have run into this common problem, our spouses view of racing. Mine is having trouble with my desire to start racing. So I am asking for help to gather all the info I can to convince her that formula first is safer than driving to the corner store. I have a car lined up, and the mechanical ability ( Helicopter Mechanic) to complete and compete. Tim and Terry have been very helpful. Looking forward to the assistance. Email at drobertsone@yahoo.com.

Hi Lou, Happy New Year !! Thanks for the post, It's nice to see people out there as dedicated as we are in growing the class. You should know that your group is always welcome to run with ours, ASA is not as tuff to deal with as SCCA. You can contact Hurley Hatch at www.proautosports.com to see what you would need to do (if anything ) to run with us. We now have 4 First racers that show up to every event, and more on the way. J.P., Terry, Joe, and at least 2 more have cars are in various stages of production. All are tuff competitors and clean racers.

We have a great schedule this year, which includes 2 weekends at INDE, the new track in Willcox, AZ.

So far ASA doesn't recognize Formula first as a class, they put us the Formula Vee class, but I am trying to get that changed. No matter to me, I just like to race, they can call us whatever they want as long as they let us on the track. I will call you in the next few days.

Do you have a website or blog for FST? if so I would be happy to trade links. Also be sure to check out the new videos of "Inde" and the "wild ride" I posted last week on the main page. And if you have any race videos or photos of your cars, please post them. I have given you permissions to post photos and videos, if you have any trouble let me know and we be happy to help out. If you have any suggestions for this site , I would be happy to hear them as well.

Thanks again for your participation, it is much apprciated, I look forward to racing with your group!

The KRG shop was busy this weekend continuing the build of the team geno Formula First. The work this weekend focused on the dash design and installation as well as locating the radio system. Headers are now done and have shipped from Roxannes and the SR hydraulics will ship later this week so the build process will continue to pick up pace over the next few weeks. Quite a few pictures of the build were taken and will be posted this week.

Big thanks to John, Robbie and CK for all of the help this weekend......

cheers, geno

Hi Geno, welcome to our group, we look forward to competing with you!!! Sounds like the FK2 is going to be a great car!!

Your car will have some interesting differences in the cooling system, I’ll let you expalin that in more detail ( i don’t want to give away any secrets), but I am very curious to see how it will work out in this heat.

As you know I have been pushing for more competition since I joined this group, And finally we are starting to grow. Greg has come along way since he joined and is finally getting his car the way it should be, he is a very consistant and an excellent driver, John Piggot has had limited track time in his Vee and has not yet run his First, but from what I have seen, He will be serious competition as well! Terry is working on his next first, hopefully he will have it ready by the beginning of next season, I am very much looking forward to what he brings to the track, no doubt he will be tough to beat! Mauricio has struggled this year with car problems, I hope he gets things straightend out and brings his A game to the track. Joe……who knows, his car is close to ready, but he has been so busy with business and family that he hasn’t had the time to work on it, hopefully that will change and we will see him out there as well, Joe is very competetive and one of my favorite rivals! And then there is Tim, one of the most laid back guys you will ever meet…until he gets into his car, then he turns into one of the most competetive drivers I have ever come up against!!! He is a hardcore racer, But despite his aggressive nature, he always drives clean (well, most of the time :) ). I have had the best time racing Tim these past few months and we look forward to getting the rest of the group out there with us as well!!!

2010 should be the best year yet for the FormulaFirstRacing group of AZ.

Again, Geno, it’s great to hear about the progress of your car, we are looking forward to seeing you on the track. In the meantime, please post some photos.

Also, I am sure everyone wants to know what “FK2″ stands for, and who owns the FK1.
